Personal Connection

Below is a photograph and description of a math and science seminar that I attended in 2012 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison when I was eight years old. I am pictured in the bottom right corner. The seminar taught me about math and science through knitting and conducting laboratory experiments. The photograph shows me and several other girls learning to use an antique sock knitting machine from the early 1900s.

This was the first class offered to the public in Nancy Nicholas Hall, the School of Human Ecology's newest building and the first academic building on campus to be named after a woman. The event is an example of how The Wisconsin Idea continues to serve the public because I and other girls from the community attended the seminar even though we were not college students.
